Six young players should form Liverpool’s next midfield. If all goes to plan over the next year, of course.

Liverpool’s midfield isn’t ideal right now. Jordan Henderson and Thiago – two vital players – are the wrong side of 30 and injury prone. James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all out of contract in 2023. Arthur is, too, unless the club trigger their option to buy.

That leaves Fabinho as the sole senior midfielder. He’s also the only natural holding player, however. Everyone else plays a more advanced role and the only long-term options are youngsters.

But Liverpool are on the brink of an incredibly talented group of young midfielders. One major signing would complete the set, giving them something to rely on for a long time to come.

As we see it, there are six ‘hopefuls’ who could form the future.

Liverpool’s next midfield

Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho are a trio of young attacking midfielders who already form part of the squad. All have long-term contracts and all boast incredible potential.

They’re the only three we can say with any certainty that they’ll make it. Whether they’ll become superstars or not, remains to be seen. What’s clear, though, is that they’re good enough to play for Liverpool’s first-team.

The two prospects

Liverpool have two young midfielders on the books who look incredibly promising but haven’t quite cut it at the first-team level yet. The first is Tyler Morton, who made senior appearances last year without holding down a regular role.

He’s currently on loan at Blackburn Rovers and already making waves. His form this season has been good enough to earn an England Under 21s call-up, in fact, and that’s after just five starts. By the end of the season, the ‘incredible’ youngster may earn a squad place at Liverpool.

The other is Stefan Bajcetic, who continues to impress everyone at the club. His efforts in pre-season were fantastic and he’s delivering for the Under 21s at just 17. He appears to be the future in the holding role and, with any luck, can deputise for Fabinho before long.

The big-money arrival

Everyone knows Liverpool’s plan. They want Jude Bellingham, even if the Athletic report his asking price at £130m. The Borussia Dortmund star is arguably the best young midfielder on the planet and the Reds will want him as their centrepiece for the future.

How realistic is it? Well, it becomes a lot more realistic if all the above players live up to their potential. Liverpool wouldn’t actually need to spend more money on their midfield in that case – it could all go on Bellingham.

That’s the dream scenario and the next year will show us how realistic is truly is. Getting Bellingham will be key to it all but the other pieces must fall into place, too.
