'People should back off': Glen Johnson says £160k-a-week Liverpool star deserves time to turn things around

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has claimed that recent criticism of Trent Alexander-Arnold is ‘harsh.’

Speaking to Anfield Watch on Twitter, Johnson said that the Liverpool star deserves time to get his confidence back.

“I personally think people should back off. He’s [Trent] set the bar so high in recent years that people are so quick to jump on his back just because he’s not at the level that we’re used to seeing him,” said the 38-year-old. “We all know that he’s better going forward than defending but there’s nothing wrong with that, every player’s better at something than they are something else.

“I think it’s a bit harsh [the criticism]. Of course, he’s not been playing to the level that he’d want and the level we’re used to seeing him, but you don’t lose your ability overnight. He’s still a young lad, once he gets going and gets a bit more confidence, I’m sure he’ll hit the heights that he’s been at in the past.”

Johnson jumps to Trent’s defence

It’s quite apt to hear the words of Johnson here. He was of course a right-back himself, and often dealt with questions over his defensive capabilities.

Although he didn’t ever reach the levels we’ve seen from Trent over recent years, he was very much in the attacking full-back mould.

As with Alexander-Arnold, he would often contribute in the final third of the field. Like Trent, he was also more than capable of doing his defending.

But unfortunately, in another echo of Liverpool’s £160k-a-week man, any slight mistake from Johnson would be over-blown.

If the former England man didn’t track a runner, he’d get dragged over the coals. If he wasn’t positioned perfectly, then he would too.

As a result, Johnson is well placed to judge Alexander-Arnold’s recent form.

It’s encouraging then, that he’s so adamant that the 23-year-old will turn things around. Given the quality of Liverpool’s right-back, that’s surely going to be sooner rather than later.
