'As a number 6': Excitement continues to grow around Liverpool's 'excellent' 17-year-old

The excitement continues to grow around Liverpool’s Stefan Bajcetic. Under-21s boss Barry Lewtas was impressed once again this week.

Stefan Bajcetic partnered Arthur in midfield this week as Liverpool Under 21s lost 1-0 at Rochdale in the Papa Johns Trophy. It wasn’t the greatest performance from the Reds but the kids got experience against a senior side. That can be invaluable.

Bajcetic is getting plenty of that experience this season, of course. He’s made his Premier League debut, setting a record in the process, and enjoyed an excellent pre-season with the first team.

We liked what we saw and so did Liverpool’s coaches. Once again, Bajcetic earned praise from staff as Barry Lewtas was sure to name-drop the 17-year-old after the Rochdale match.

“I thought Stefan was excellent,” Lewtas told the Liverpool Echo. “As a number six, we were able to play through him. I thought we built really well.”

The excitement around Stefan Bajcetic

There wasn’t too much talk around Bajcetic in his first 12 months at Liverpool – certainly not as a potential senior player. 2022 has been massive, however, with the young Spaniard swapping centre-back for holding midfield and truly finding himself.

Bajcetic now looks like the future of Liverpool’s midfield in that role. He can seemingly do everything, after all, from being a physical defensive presence to, as Lewtas says, letting the team play through him.

And we shouldn’t forget – Bajcetic is 17 and doesn’t turn 18 for another month. He’s an incredibly young player for what he’s currently doing and is nowhere near his peak.

Given the teenager already looks good enough to play a part this season, Bajcetic’s potential looks massive. Liverpool appear to have a special talent here and someone they can put faith in for some time.

While there’s still quite a lot of development to go, everyone should expect to see Bajcetic feature more often this season. He just keeps impressing.
