Report: £20m Liverpool player was desperate to play for his country during the international break

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was desperate to play for England during the September international break.

That’s according to The Daily Mail, who report that the Liverpool player has made a surprise return to Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Henderson wasn’t named in the initial squad having picked up an injury in August. But with Kalvin Phillips dropping out, a space opened up.

And according to The Mail, it was of ‘great importance’ to the 32-year-old to be involved. After sitting out of England’s last games in June, Henderson reportedly didn’t want to miss out again with the World Cup looming.

Liverpool’s midfield finally coming back together

There was a real surprise for Liverpool fans on Tuesday morning. Not many would have seen a call-up for Henderson forthcoming.

Despite the surprise, it’s obviously good news to have the captain back. He had always been slated to return after the break was completed but has now clearly gone one step better.

There could be some understandable worry that Henderson isn’t yet ready to make his comeback, though. After missing over three weeks, a little extra time at the AXA wouldn’t have done any harm.

But according to The Mail, Jurgen Klopp has ‘given his blessing’ for his captain to join up with England. If Klopp is happy, then you’d have to assume that Henderson has proven his fitness.

As a result, it means that the £20m man only ended up missing three games for Liverpool. With Arthur Melo brought in on the back of his injury, the Reds are suddenly looking much better in the midfield department.

By the time their next game rolls around – against Brighton on 1st October – Klopp should have a decent number of players to choose from.

As well as Arthur improving his match fitness in the U21s, Thiago Alcantara is now fit and firing. Fabinho and Harvey Elliott are away on international duty but should hopefully return free of any issues.

Add Henderson, Fabio Carvalho and James Milner to the mix, and Liverpool’s midfield is starting to look more like it.
