'I always said': £40m man shares why he didn't move this summer, amid claims he was trying to join Liverpool

Reported Liverpool transfer target Youri Tielemans has spoken out about why he stayed at Leicester City this summer.

The Belgian midfielder had widely been expected to leave Leicester, with Liverpool one of the sides in the running. In the end though, Tielemans ended up staying at the King Power.

Now, in quotes from Football Daily, the 25-year-old has shared why things panned out that way.

“I didn’t leave Leicester in the summer as I always said the project had to be the right one. Just because things are getting worse now at Leicester doesn’t mean that I should regret staying,” said Tielemans.

Tielemans sticks it out at Leicester

Things have gone horribly for Leicester so far this season. Brendan Rodgers’ side sit dead last in the Premier League with one point from seven games.

Despite his flirtations with leaving in the summer, Tielemans has started six of those seven games. Personally, it hasn’t been a bad start for the Belgium international. He has a goal and an assist in his appearances so far.

Although his team have been poor, that shows some indication as to why clubs were interested in Tielemans.

The player had just a year left on his contract this summer, too. As a result, he could have potentially been bought for far less than the £40m Leicester bought him for.

To that end, Tielemans was claimed to be attempting to engineer a move to Liverpool. According to Ben Jacobs of The Football Terrace, the Belgian and his agent were ‘pushing’ links to the Reds.

“There are a variety of midfielders who could be considered by Liverpool. One is Youri Tielemans, who would be open to a Liverpool move,” said Jacobs in August. “I know that because his agent had pushed Liverpool links earlier in windows, particularly in January when the Arsenal links formed.”

Now, it looks certain that Tielemans will move on for nothing next summer, or in January for a knock-down fee. With Liverpool still in the market for a midfielder, maybe his name will be back on their list as a cut-price option.
