Report: Liverpool have now set their sights on signing 'very strong' midfielder in January

Liverpool are interested in making a move for Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes in the January transfer window.

That’s according to Calciomercato, who claim that Liverpool have ‘set their sights’ on the Brazilian.

Liverpool won’t have a clear run at him, though. That’s because Manchester United are also keen to bring the 21-year-old to Old Trafford.

Gomes has been excelling for Flamengo this season and looks set for a move to Europe sooner or later.

Liverpool planning for January already

Whether Liverpool are in the market for a midfielder in January is likely to be dependent on how Arthur Melo does between now and then.

The 26-year-old has been rumoured to be potentially in line for return to Juventus in January. However, those reports have been disputed, with Liverpool instead reportedly happy with how the midfielder is training.

If Arthur can kick on, then Jurgen Klopp may be satisfied with his options until the end of the season. Should the Brazilian struggle though, then the need for a new face in January will be heightened.

In that scenario, Liverpool will do what they always do in the market: look for the right opportunity.

That means scouring the market for a slightly left-field option. In that respect, Gomes is perhaps not as left-field as he would have been six months ago.

Now, the young midfielder is one of the most impressive players in Brazil. His displays for Flamengo have led to him being called ‘very strong physically’ and ‘unique’ by his manager Paulo Sousa via Globo.

Gomes himself has also spoken of his desire to move to Europe in the future. Interestingly, the midfielder mentioned Liverpool specifically as a team he’d love to join.

The youngster did sign a new five-year contract at Flamengo today. But still, if the cards fall into place this winter, perhaps this is one to watch for Liverpool fans.
