‘A Liverpool rewind’: Carragher wants Liverpool to return to a tactic from Klopp’s early days

Jamie Carragher believes it’s time Liverpool return to their original tactics under Jurgen Klopp from 2015. The Reds are need a change.

Liverpool aren’t playing well at the moment and it could be time for a change. That was undoubtedly the feeling coming out of the 4-1 defeat to Napoli last week – a result Jurgen Klopp believes is the worst he’s seen at the club.

But what could that change look like? Klopp has a certain way of playing, after all – Liverpool aren’t about to start parking the bus a la José Mourinho.

Jamie Carragher has an idea, though. He wants Liverpool to return to basics and the tactics of 2015. It might mean sacrificing solidity for the time being but it would be a step in the right direction,

“After the defeat in Napoli, Klopp spoke about a Liverpool ‘reinvention’,” Carragher told the Telegraph. “To me, it begins with a Liverpool rewind.”

“Liverpool’s squad includes enough players who can provide the dynamism off the ball that typied the first incarnation of Klopp’s side; [Darwin] Nunez, [Diogo] Jota, Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott are attacking upgrades on what Klopp inherited in October 2015,” he went on to say.

“The obvious problem is they all prefer to operate in the final third and there are inevitable dangers to the team’s balance if too many are included in the same starting XI.

“However, for Klopp’s high pressing system to work, it needs their energy. That is the most obvious way to go, short-term at least, to make his ideas work again.”

Carragher wants Liverpool to return to 2015 tactics

It’s an interesting suggestion but we think it might be too soon. After all, those tactics can’t deliver the same kind of consistency that we’ve seen from Liverpool in recent years. That consistency is required to win the title.

Are Liverpool ready to give up on that and enter a ‘transitional’ season. Things might reach that point but it’s September. The Reds fell over 10 points back last season and still took the title race to the final day – they can do it again.

If things still aren’t working in a couple of months – or by the World Cup – then we can see Klopp following this path. Liverpool could just start rebuilding around younger players, knowing full well that they won’t win the trophies this season. It could end up paying dividends next season.

But other ideas must come first. Liverpool can’t be giving up on competing at the top level just yet.
