Klopp names the ‘worst game’ Liverpool have played under him – even worse than the 7-2 loss to Aston Villa

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool losing 4-1 to Napoli was a worse performance than the 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa. And he’s absolutely right.

Liverpool put in an embarrassing performance against Napoli last week. Not that they’re hiding from that at all, of course – everything coming out of the club since has recongised just how bad it was.

In fact, Jurgen Klopp believes that defeat was the absolute worst from a Liverpool side under his management. That’s including the 7-2 loss to Aston Villa in 2020.

“I watched the game back plenty of times and it was a real horror show, to be honest, so we showed the boys the situation as well,” said Klopp, per Liverpoolfc.com. “They knew but then seeing it again makes it really obvious.

“That was the worst game we played since I am here and we had a few bad games, we all know that, everybody remembers probably Aston Villa and some others where we were just not up to speed and stuff like this. But there were always glimpses of us, even in these games.

“In this particular game, nothing.”

Napoli 4-1 Liverpool

Klopp is right and we’re not sure there’s any argument otherwise. The defeat to Villa was a freak result, one in which several of their goals were just unfortunate. Deflections, an awful mistake from Adrian – it was a 1-in-a-million match.

Napoli? Liverpool were actually lucky that it was only 3-0 at half-time. Napoli missed a penalty, had one cleared off the line and hit the post inside 45 seconds. They could have gone off for the break cursing their fortune.

And what hurts the most about this one is that it’s right in a period of awful Liverpool form. For instance, the 3-0 loss against Watford in 2020 was another freak result – the Reds’ first defeat in a year. The 5-0 vs Manchester City was after a red card, and the 4-0 against the same opponents after Liverpool won the title.

This, though, was an awful result with no excuses and little reason to write it off. Instead, we’ll be watching the Ajax game with hope that Liverpool learned from last week. Perhaps it provides a jolt of energy for the players. Maybe it brings about exciting tactical change.

All we can say for sure is that it’s a low-point that must see a reaction.
