Liverpool have settled on Douglas Luiz as their main transfer target for January, according to reports. The Reds may reinforce.
This comes from Calciomercato in Italy. They claim that Roma, Juventus and AC Milan all want Douglas Luiz but face competition from Liverpool. The Reds, says the report, have made the Aston Villa player their main target.
That suggests a January move could be on the cards, with another factor playing a part. Steven Gerrard – who may or may not be the Villa boss come the New Year – is a big fan of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Liverpool could use that to their advantage, it seems.
Liverpool target Douglas Luiz in January
Take this one with a major grain of salt, of course, as we don’t believe Calciomercato can claim this with any real authority. But it’s certainly not beyond the realm of possibility.
Sky Sports claimed that Liverpool showed interest in Luiz late in the summer transfer window. They eventually signed Arthur Melo from Juve, of course, but it’s unlikely that he’s the only midfield reinforcement this season.
For one, both Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are struggling with injuries and out of contract next year. James Milner is out of form and also in the final year of his deal. Jordan Henderson will stick around for some time but again, he can’t stay fit for too long.

We do believe Liverpool could move in January, then, and they have some options. Luiz is unquestionably one of them and is a player we think fits in. His stats are wonderfully average – in that, he guarantees you a solid level at just about everything.
That could be exactly what Liverpool need in their squad right now. Pure reliability – and someone who could easily improve under Jurgen Klopp and co.
While we doubt the report’s claim of him being a ‘main target’, it’s not something that would shock us come January.
