Liverpool could have two key players back before they next kick a ball in the Premier League.
As a result of the death of Queen Elizabeth II yesterday, tomorrow’s game with Wolves has been postponed. Now, as per The Telegraph journalist Ben Rumsby on Twitter, next weekend’s game with Chelsea is also in doubt.
That would mean that Liverpool’s next Premier League fixture would be after the international break on October 1st.
Taking on Brighton at Anfield that day, they could be boosted by the return of both Jordan Henderson and Ibrahima Konate.
The two players are currently out with injuries. But with returns projected for after the international break, they could now miss less action than previously thought.
Liverpool given time to re-find their form
From a footballing point of view, there will be mixed reactions to the news that Liverpool may not play league football for almost a month.
In a way, it’s good news for Liverpool. They’ve been in rotten form recently. The break will give Jurgen Klopp the chance to regroup his players on the training pitch away from the spotlight.
On the other hand, sometimes a quick reprise is the best way. After such a dismal performance last time out against Napoli, it might have done the players good to be back on the pitch so soon.
Thankfully, Liverpool do still have a game to prepare for on the horizon. That match comes on Tuesday evening against Ajax in the Champions League.
In that respect, The Reds will have something of the best of both worlds. They’ll be able to get the Napoli game out of their system whilst still having time to correct their poor form in time for the Premier League’s return.
The anticipated comeback of both Konate and Henderson will also be very welcome. Konate hasn’t been seen since July and his happy presence will make a difference. Liverpool’s defence has been all over the place recently. Hopefully Ibou can help try to solve that.
Henderson meanwhile has endured a difficult start to the campaign. But the no.14 is still the captain, and still a key player for Klopp. Liverpool need his experience and leadership as they try to get their form back.
So, whilst being frustrating and potentially incredibly costly for some fans, there could be some silver lining left for Liverpool after all.
