‘I wish’: Jose Enrique says Liverpool could have done with £38m man playing in every position against Napoli

Jose Enrique says he wishes Liverpool had a Luis Diaz playing in every position against Napoli last night.

The Reds’ evening at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona was about as bad as it gets. A 4-1 defeat flattered them in the end with horrendous performances littered throughout the team.

But taking to Twitter former Liverpool left-back Enrique suggested that at least one player deserves to be spared the fury of the fans.

“I wish he [we] had 11 Luis Diaz in the team. He gives 110% every game. What a player,” wrote the Spaniard.

Diaz emerges with some credit, as Liverpool are humiliated

Indeed, Diaz was the only outfield starter for Liverpool who deserves anything like any credit for the game last night.

In fact, as the game went on and Liverpool looked even more ragged, the Colombian seemed to go the opposite way.

As Napoli tore The Reds open time after time, Diaz looked more and more up for it. His furious reaction to having a header saved despite the 4-1 scoreline tells you everything you need to know about his mentality.

With his teammates looking disinterested around him, Diaz was the only one who looked to be hurting from the humiliation.

Once Thiago Alcantara made his long-awaited comeback that changed a little. The 31-year-old added a bite that was sorely missing from the midfield and glared at those around him for not following his lead. He has to start on Saturday.

Like his teammates though, Diaz isn’t immune from some criticism. The £38m man missed a couple of presentable chances to add to the one he took and didn’t really get going until after the half-time break.

By then, it was far too late.

For those not of a Liverpool persuasion, this result will be a bit of a shock. For Liverpool fans, it has been coming. Something isn’t right just at the moment, and Jurgen Klopp has a job on his hands to fix it.

If the rest of his squad can begin to mirror Diaz’s attitude from the second half last night, that would be a good place to start.
