‘Up to now’: Alan Shearer names the only two players who are at their best for Liverpool

Alan Shearer believes only two Liverpool players are in-form right now. The rest will catch up, he went on to say.

Things continue to stutter at Liverpool, then. The Reds dropped more points on Saturday, this time to Everton in a fairly mad game.

Both teams hit the woodwork, with Liverpool managing to come that close three times. All three forward – Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah – saw an effort bounce back out.

Overall, Liverpool just weren’t at their best once again. There were bright moments, as there usually are, but things just aren’t quite clicking.

Alan Shearer believes that’s because only two Reds are actually ‘at their level’ right now. Everyone else is playing catchup as they gradually reach their peak.

“Other than [Luis] Diaz, maybe, Harvey Elliott, they haven’t reached their level yet,” Shearer told Match of the Day. “They do look as if they’ve got another yard to go.

“At times they’ve looked leggy this season, up to now. They’ll improve, I’m sure of that. No doubt about it.”

In-form Liverpool players

Shearer might be right about this. That isn’t to say that no one else is playing well – plenty are – but at their best? Elliott certainly is and Diaz does look like a threat in every game. He could easily have won the derby, of course.

With other players, it is a bit hit and miss. Virgil van Dijk has some great moments but isn’t quite firing to his top level. Mohamed Salah is playing well but isn’t getting the chances he usually does. Of course, Darwin Nunez is still fitting in.

The full-backs, too, are having their moments while not really hitting the mark as often as they usually do.

Roberto Firmino is perhaps another who is playing at his top level, though. The Brazilian is in terrific form – even if his Old Trafford performance was below par. The last few games, however, have been Firmino at his best.

We’d agree with Shearer on the whole. Liverpool have a few bright sparks here and there but quite clearly have another level – or two – to reach. Hopefully, it doesn’t take much longer to get there.
