Liverpool youngster Ben Doak has today been called up to the U21 squad for Scotland for the very first time.
As per scottishfa.co.uk, the 16-year-old joins the 23-man squad for the two friendly fixtures later this month.
At just sixteen, this is a massive achievement for the young winger. As he’s shown at Liverpool since his arrival this summer, he’s a hugely exciting prospect.
The call-up continues a good couple of days for Doak. Starting for Liverpool in the UEFA Youth League for the first time yesterday, he scored an excellent solo goal as the Young Reds beat Napoli 2-1.
Doak cuts through the doom and gloom
As doom and gloom surround the club following a dismal display in Naples last night, this is something to be positive about.
Doak has been electric for the U19s this season and looks like a potential future first-team option.
Still so young, there’s no need for Liverpool to rush him. But it should be remembered that despite his age, Doak has already tasted senior football for Celtic. And in an Old Firm derby no less.
As anyone who has watched him will attest to, this is a young man in a hurry. Doak plays at a speed that frightens opposition defences.
With Liverpool struggling to inject that kind of pace into their first-team games, they ought to be keeping an eye on his progress.
The young Scot is obviously playing at a level above the one his years suggest he should be. As Jurgen Klopp searches for the answers to Liverpool’s woes, maybe the solutions lie in looking to the youth.
