Liverpool do have an option to buy Arthur Melo. Juventus have confirmed it, along with the exact amount the Reds can pay.

It was initially reported that Liverpool would not have a buy option for Arthur Melo. That was the line just about everywhere but it appears it was wrong.

Juventus have released the official document for the deal with Liverpool. It shows a one-year loan until the end of the season costing €4.5m (£3.88m) and, importantly, an option to buy Arthur.

Liverpool can sign the player for €37.5m (£32.3m) and are able to pay that over the course of two years. It means Arthur has the chance to earn a future at Anfield that wasn’t apparent earlier in the day.

Liverpool have option to buy Arthur Melo

Well, this is interesting. It really seemed that Liverpool had no intention of keeping Arthur long-term and this was a pure stop-gap. Instead, they could decide to make him a permanent fixture at Anfield.

It increases our excitement about this quite a bit. No option to buy would suggest that Liverpool really don’t rate the player too highly and wanted to mitigate the risk. That’s certainly in line with a last-minute deal in the wake of Jordan Henderson’s injury.

And if Arthur shone, Liverpool couldn’t have capitalised. Now it seems they can – if Arthur thrives, the Reds will pick him up in 2023.

We like that a lot because Arthur is unquestionably talented. He’s one of the best passers in Europe, in fact, and a player who could truly develop into something special. Yes, he’s 26 but never had a fair go of it with Juventus.

Liverpool will give him a chance to play the role he thrives in, though. If he takes his opportunity in the best way, they’ll give him the chance to play it for a long time to come.
