Liverpool's Champions League chances have now been predicted with the Group Stage set

Liverpool’s Champions League chances have been assessed by data analysis company, FiveThirtyEight. The Reds are one of the favourites.

Data analysts at FiveThirtyEight believe Liverpool are the fourth favourites to win the UEFA Champions League this season. The Reds have an 11% chance at winning the final.

That’s twice as likely as the fifth favourites – reigning champions, Real Madrid. In fact, everyone below Liverpool is essentially considered an outsider for the trophy.

So who’s above Liverpool, then? The favourites are Bayern Munich. 538 believes they have a 21% chance of winning the final in 2023, 3% ahead of Manchester City.

Paris Saint-Germain are then the team one place above Liverpool. The analysis believes they’d win the trophy 13% of the time.

Liverpool’s Champions League chances

We’ll take fourth favourites, even if it feels a little low. We think both Bayern and PSG have major question marks over them this season, for one.

Bayern have been so reliant on Robert Lewandowski in recent time but he’s now gone. Will Sadio Mané replace his goals? We’ll just have to see on that.

And PSG are PSG. You can give them all the talent in the world and you still wouldn’t back them to hold onto a 1-0 lead late in a second leg. We certainly wouldn’t be too concerned if Liverpool drew them in a later round.

But we do have the Group Stage to navigate first, of course. Group A holds some talented players who could seriously hurt Liverpool, too – even if Antony, our pick as Ajax’s most dangerous player, has now left them.

Still, it’s another tough group and one that Liverpool need to be at their best for. Get through this group playing well, though, and we think the Reds can win this competition. City are the team to beat, as far as we see it, and we know Jurgen Klopp can get the better of them.

So fourth-favourites for now but things can quickly change.
