Liverpool will play in Champions League Group A after Thursday’s draw. Here is a player from each opponent who could hurt them.
Liverpool and Champions League Group A
Ajax – Antony (or Dusan Tadic)
Ajax are the first seed in this group after winning the Eredivisie last season. They’re an interesting opponent, too, after losing Erik ten Hag to Manchester United this summer.
As for who’s a concern – we’d pick Antony right now. The Brazilian is a fantastic winger and someone who can hurt any team on the planet. Still only 22, he’s someone to watch in world football.
But we can’t be sure that Antony will even be there. He’s linked heavily with Manchester United and may re-join Ten Hag this week.
If he’s gone, we’ll go with Dusan Tadic as the big threat. 13 goals and 19 assists in the Eredivisie shows just how good the playmaker is at his best.
Napoli – Victor Osimhen
Napoli lost some huge players this summer with Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens and Kalidou Koulibaly all departing. The former two had 22 goals between them last season.
That leaves a fairly easy choice as their most dangerous player. Osimhen truly clicked in Italy last season, scoring 18 times over 32 games. He’s a player linked with Liverpool, too, and someone we once wanted at Anfield.
It’s been tricky under new boss Luciano Spalletti, though. He compared Osimhen to Marco van Basten last year but recently threw him out of training.
The Mirror had Liverpool down as a potential suitor as recently as May, in fact. The Reds will see what they missed out on up close.
Rangers – Ryan Kent
We just have to go with Kent for this one, given his previous time at Liverpool. The Reds sold the winger to Rangers back in 2019 and he’s since developed into a fine player.
13 goals from the flank last season show that. Kent played a key role as Rangers made the Europa League final and he’ll be desperate to show Liverpool what he can do.
While Rangers have plenty of dangerous players, none will have the same motivation Kent does.
