Liverpool have shown how good Calvin Ramsay is with their deal for Sepp van den Berg on Tuesday. The 19-year-old has a bright future.
Liverpool let Sepp van den Berg leave on loan yesterday. He joins Schalke 04 – but not before signing a new contract with the Reds.
The Dutch defender has spent pre-season with Liverpool and actually held down quite an important squad role. With injuries in the squad, Van den Berg has been valuable cover in at least two positions.
His form with Preston North End last season – that saw him shine in multiple positions – showed wonderful versatility. Van den Berg was quickly labelled ‘incredible’ by one teammate a year ago and lived up to that throughout the season. Liverpool could have used that this season.
Instead, they’ve decided to move Van den Berg on for first-team football. Liverpool clearly feel that they’ve got enough cover at centre-bac and right-back, then, suggesting that Nat Phillips will remain as an option.
And it also shows wonderful faith in Calvin Ramsay.

Ramsay arrived this summer but is yet to feature at all for Liverpool. He joined with an injury, it turned out, and is yet to recover fully.
And that actually goes some way to showing how highly Liverpool rate their new full-back. Despite a lack of pre-season, despite needing to play catchup with everyone else, they’re still comfortable with Ramsay being the primary backup for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
With Van den Berg gone, after all, Ramsay is now the only other natural right-back in the squad. Liverpool plainly believe he has a part to play this season.
It would be very easy to keep an extra option around. Van den Berg would be ideal for that, as a player who has been in Liverpool’s system for some time now. Instead, Liverpool will trust that Ramsay catches up quickly and plays the role at the top level.
We always felt he had the quality and it seems Liverpool fully believe in him. Ramsay, clearly, is a player to watch this season.
