Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Liverpool may be working on a ‘secret’ midfielder ahead of transfer deadline day tomorrow.

Speaking to FTBL Culture on YouTube, Romano had a transfer update for Liverpool fans.

“I think more than a shortlist, they [Liverpool] want to find the right opportunity and jump into it as soon as possible, as they always do, this is how they work at Liverpool,” said the journalist. He then gave an evaluation of some of the names we’ve seen linked with The Reds recently.

“Barella – impossible, Frenkie [de Jong] – impossible, so it’s going to be really difficult to find those kind of players, honestly,” he said. “Also [Moises] Caicedo is not easy to negotiate with Brighton. We saw with Cucurella how tough they are in the negotiations. So I think for Caicedo in the final days of the window is going to be difficult.”

So far so discouraging for Liverpool fans. Romano also ruled out a Liverpool move for RB Leipzig’s Konrad Laimer. There was some interesting news finally though, as the journalist suggested Liverpool might be moving in silence for an unnamed player.

“If they can find an opportunity then they will jump into it. But I’m told not something super expensive, not something for £80m, £90m. At the moment it’s still something they are exploring,” he said. “It’s not going to be an easy one. But I’m sure Liverpool are exploring some secret options, maybe.”

Liverpool fans hoping for a Fabinho repeat

Time is quickly running out for Liverpool to make their move. As many of the options that could be available are ruled out, it’s difficult to see who The Reds could go for.

We have been here before with Liverpool. Their transfer dealings are often shrouded in mystery, with no-one fully informed until things are at a late stage.

As a result, perhaps the best we can hope for at this stage is a Fabinho-esque announcement.

The Brazilian was unveiled out of the blue the day after the Champions League final defeat of 2018. No links, no rumours, no nothing. But there he was, in a Liverpool kit all the same.

Those are the best kind of transfers. But they’re also exceptionally rare. If nothing concrete materialises by the end of today, it’s pretty safe to assume that Liverpool’s business is finished.

Whether that’s a mistake or not will play out over the course of the season. As options return from injury and Jurgen Klopp leans on young Stefan Bajcetic a little more, things should clear up a little.

But Liverpool absolutely must start to plan for next summer’s window immediately. They can’t let themselves be caught out like this again, it’s becoming a concerning habit.
