Premier League stat suggests Liverpool fans should all brace for disappointment this week

Liverpool are extremely unlikely to make a deadline day transfer if reported data is correct. The Reds don’t do their business late.

The Athletic did some data research into Premier League transfers this week. More specifically, they looked at when teams do their signings, using transfers over the last five years.

And it doesn’t exactly make good reading for those Liverpool fans hoping for a deadline day transfer. In fact, it’s incredibly unlikely that the Reds do anything.

The data shows that Liverpool have made one deadline-day signing in that time. If we’re remembering correctly, that was Ben Davies from Preston North End in 2021. Ozan Kabak arrived the same day but technically wasn’t a transfer – the Reds loaned him for six months with an option to buy. They didn’t take up that option.

That sole signing is the fewest deadline-day signings of any Premier League side. It’s 6% of their overall signings in that time, too, which is joint-lowest with Wolves.

In other words, Liverpool are incredibly unlikely to do anything over the next few days.

Liverpool seek deadline day transfer

Of course, ‘unlikely’ doesn’t equal ‘won’t’. Liverpool could still find a transfer late in the window and we do know that they’re looking.

“I know we have had this discussion since it all started and I am the one who said we don’t need a midfielder and I was wrong. That’s the situation,” Klopp said this week, per the Telegraph. “But the specific point doesn’t change – we will do something but it has to be the right one. We will see.”

But ‘the right one’ is the key bit. Liverpool will only move if the perfect deal shows itself and that’s highly unlikely to happen right at the death. Teams don’t like losing good players without time to replace them, after all.

So while there are good players out there, it doesn’t mean they’re available for the price Liverpool want to pay. As per usual, they likely won’t sign anyone this late
