Ian Wright has urged Jurgen Klopp to sign Jude Bellingham for Liverpool.
Speaking on The Kelly & Wrighty Show on Optus Sport, Wright said that a midfield of Bellingham, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones would start for Liverpool for years.
“If he could go somewhere like Liverpool it would be an unbelievable signing,” said the pundit. “When you look at Bellingham, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott – who is only going to get better because he has so much technical ability.
“You could see where Jones, Elliott and Bellingham could really be that midfield for a few years to come.”
Competition for places in Liverpool’s midfield
It’s not a hot take for Wright to suggest that signing Bellingham would help sort Liverpool’s midfield issues out.
The 19-year-old has long been seen as The Reds’ ideal signing for the position. There’ll be intense competition for his signature next summer, but Liverpool will surely be in the race.
Should they land him, then the midfield Wright mentions could become a reality. However, at this stage it looks unlikely that it would be a first-choice trio for Klopp.
At the moment, that’s largely down to the fact that Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara are Liverpool’s two best midfielders. For however long Thiago’s at the football club, it should be those two plus another.
Klopp working on future-proofing his options
But as Thiago is already the wrong side of 30, with Fabinho not too far behind, Liverpool need to future-proof the midfield.
Elliott could certainly be one of the players to take over the mantle. He’s been impressive in the early part of this season and at nineteen is still incredibly young.
Remarkably, Elliott is actually a couple of months older than Bellingham. But the two playing together is an excellent prospect for both Liverpool and England.
Jones’ future is a little less certain. Sure, he has the natural talent of both the other two players. But the 21-year-old is yet to display that on a regular basis. Until he does, he’ll continue to be seen as a squad player.
Regardless of the potential options that Klopp could pair him with, Liverpool first need to make sure they can get Bellingham done. That isn’t going to be easy in itself. If they can though, Wright is obviously correct, he’d be an unbelievable addition.
