Ian Wright has shared that Curtis Jones wasn’t happy with his reaction to Jadon Sancho scoring for Manchester United against Liverpool.
Speaking on the Wrighty’s House podcast, Wright said that he actually watched the game with the Liverpool star. And having seen him cheering Sancho on after his goal, Jones wasn’t best pleased.
“When Jadon Sancho scored, you get up and clap, you’re around them [the fans in the stadium]. And I don’t want them to think, ‘oh why are you not clapping? Who are you supporting? Liverpool?’
“Curtis Jones was watching it with us. So when I got up and I was clapping Jadon, I said I’m so pleased for Jadon, he went like that to me, like ‘sit down’ with his face!” said the pundit.
A quite unlikely combination it must be said.
More frustration for Jones as he sits out United clash
It must have been frustrating for Jones to have to sit out of yet another big game for Liverpool.
Last year, the 21-year-old was a first-half substitue as Liverpool ran riot at Old Trafford. A high point of the Scouser’s career no doubt.
This season, he’s still nursing a reported calf injury that has decimated his beginning to the campaign.
Had he been fit, it’s not out of the question that Jones would have started against United. He would certainly have offered a bit more invention than either Jordan Henderson or James Milner were able to.
That could have enhanced Liverpool’s chances of winning, as well as his claims to a regular starting spot.
Instead, it could still be a couple of weeks before we see Jones again. With The Reds’ midfield struggling for bodies, his return really can’t come soon enough.
At times, the academy graduate does split opinion amongst the Liverpool fan base. It’s clear that he still has another level to hit and it can sometimes frustrate that he’s been a little slow to reach that level.
Once back in the fold, we could really do with him finding that zenith.
