Stephen Warnock believes Liverpool should go out and spend £25m on a Premier League midfielder immediately. The Reds could use something new.
Midfield is quite clearly the problem position for Liverpool right now. They’re lacking reliable players in the prime of their career – everyone is either a little injury-prone or still too inexperienced.
Thus calls continue to grow for Liverpool to buy someone new. We know Jude Bellingham would be a fantastic signing, for instance, but that isn’t happening. Not in 2022, at least. So who’s left?
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes the Reds have already missed out on a ‘perfect’ signing. There is still another hope in the Premier League, however.
“One of the guys that stands out to me was obviously Yves Bissouma who went to Tottenham,” he told the BBC. “For the fee that they paid for him, I think he would have been perfect for Liverpool.
“But the other one at the moment who is available, who seems like he’s after a move, is Tielemans from Leicester. And you think, could he be the replacement?
“Would you pay something like £25m for someone like him to come into midfield, to offer that competitiveness needed in those central positions?”
Liverpool to spend on a Premier League midfielder
There was a time when Tielemans looked like a fantastic signing for anyone. His form dropped dramatically last season, though – he feels like a bit of a risk right now.
But the positives are clear. Tielemans knows how to perform in the Premier League and at 25, he’s right at the start of his prime years. Liverpool could quickly turn him into a star.

There’s little chance that £25m gets him to Anfield, however. That’s the big problem here. He’d likely cost a small fortune to pull away from Leicester and we’re not sure he’s worth that risk.
Bissouma is an interesting one, though. Warnock isn’t the first former Liverpool player to regret missing out on that one – John Barnes said similar in July. But we can only assume that the club didn’t quite see him as a good fit.
Unfortunately, they don’t seem to see many as a good fit. No one readily available for a decent price, anyway. And that might end up costing Liverpool this season.
