Liverpool youngster Tyler Morton helped Blackburn Rovers to a win in the Carabao Cup last night whilst playing at centre-back.
And by the sound of it, Morton put in a good display too. The Liverpool loanee’s club posted about him on Twitter at the final whistle to commend him on a ‘boss’ performance.
“To the LFC fans asking, yes Tyler Morton really did play centre-back tonight……he was boss,” wrote the Blackburn official Twitter account.
Rovers beat Bradford City 2-1 with the 19-year-old Liverpool man at the heart of the defence. An interesting development in Morton’s progress.
Morton sends early reminder to Rovers
This isn’t necessarily what Morton was sent on-loan to do this season, but it will perhaps please Jurgen Klopp all the same.
That’s because the main thing holding the youngster back right now is his physicality. He has excellent technical qualities and a seemingly good tactical brain. But the truth is that he still looks fresh out of the academy.
Playing midfield regularly in the Championship will hopefully help to give him the added bit of brawn he’s missing.
But playing in defence away to a League Two side on a Tuesday evening in the cup? That’s a great way of testing yourself physically, and mentally too.
On this evidence, Morton came through his test with flying colours.
It will be fascinating to see whether this is something that the teenager will add to his repertoire moving forwards. Now that he’s shown himself capable of handling the position, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him do it again for Rovers.
All good development for Morton. He’s yet to start a game in the Championship since joining his new club. Fingers crossed this good performance can serve as a reminder that he can very much help his new team in their quest for promotion.
