A former Man United midfielder – and World Cup winner – feels Liverpool were better than their hosts in the 2-1 defeat. United simply did ‘one thing really well’.
Bastian Schweinsteiger belives Liverpool were the better team on Monday at Old Trafford, despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United. He thinks the hosts simply did ‘one thing really well’.
“You know of course I support United and I’m very happy they won,” he told BBC Radio Manchester. “But was it a great performance in my opinion if I compare it with other teams … the top teams in Europe? I wouldn’t say so.
“For me Liverpool was the better team actually and they had much more possession in the game. But you know United did one thing really well. They had the right attitude towards the game, the right spirit in the team.”
Were Liverpool better than Man United
It’s certainly true that Liverpool dominated possession at Old Trafford. It’s also true that just one or two moments could have swung things in an entirely different direction.
But we can’t say that Liverpool were better than United. For one thing, Erik ten Hag’s gameplan worked and Jurgen Klopp’s didn’t. They wanted to press the Reds at the right moments and spring rapid, direct counter-attacks. That’s exactly what they did.
Liverpool, on the other hand, couldn’t gain a measure of control and struggled badly against a fairly basic press. Yes, they had lots of the ball but it’s not as though they frequently cut through United with it.
So while we can see where Schweinsteiger is coming from, Liverpool just weren’t the better team. Perhaps there’s a positive in there, though. Even while we’re looking at a terrible performance from the Reds, it still wasn’t too far from a winning one.
