Jamie Carragher gave a damning assessment of Liverpool after a shocking first half against Manchester United tonight. The Reds were truly awful.
Liverpool went to Old Trafford on Monday night with an expectation that they’d roll Manchester United over. Instead, the Reds rolled over for the hosts.
Jurgen Klopp’s side – the standard bearer for intensity and pressing – couldn’t handle the intensity or pressing that United had to offer. It was truly awful from Liverpool, who just looked short on just about everything.
Jamie Carragher, doing commentary for Sky Sports, certainly wasn’t impressed. He gave a damning half-time assessment of Liverpool’s performance, at which time the Reds were 1-0 down.
“They weren’t ready for a derby game,” said Carragher. “Credit to Manchester United because looked like a young, fresh team against a team of old men who can’t get about the pitch.”

That about sums it all up. That display carried on into the second half – at one point, Sky put up a graphic that showed United with around twice as many sprints as Liverpool. No one was possibly shocked at that.
This was like watching a completely different team and they had United looking like a sleek, modern football team. You’d think the hosts were one of Europe’s best pressing sides with how poor Liverpool’s passing was. If they now are, they learned how to do it in a week.

We doubt that’s the case.
Liverpool were just slow and rattled by a United team that knew what the game was. It’s honestly shocking to see – this was the worst Liverpool performance in quite some time, all things considered.
Injuries are there, of course, but that starting XI was a normal one. There’s no obvious reason for this performance and Liverpool will surely have an inquest this week.
