Jordan Henderson has named Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Barcelona in 2019 as his favourite ever game for the club.
Speaking to BBC Sport, the Liverpool captain was asked to pick the most cherished of his 452 appearances for The Reds. With a few to pick from, it turns out that Henderson’s favourite game for Liverpool isn’t one where he lifted a trophy at the end of it.
“I’d say favourite game in terms of everything surrounding it, would be Barcelona at home. I think that would be one. Obviously I could go Champions league final, but I think my favourite one that stands out would be Barcelona at Anfield,” said the skipper.
A good choice Hendo. It must have been special to be involved in one of Anfield’s greatest ever nights.
Looking back at the night that really started it all
It’s easy to forget looking back. But that game against Barcelona in May 2019 really kick-started Liverpool as a trophy-winning machine.
Prior to that, Liverpool hadn’t won anything in over seven years. Despite giant steps of improvement, Jurgen Klopp was yet to lift a trophy at Anfield.
Vincent Kompany had pretty much killed their title hopes literally the night before. Trailing Barca 3-0 from the first-leg, things were on a bit of a knife-edge. It looked like Liverpool would end yet another year without silverware.
What happened next still beggars belief no matter how many times you watch the footage. Now, it seems inevitable, but it never was.
Liverpool absolutely destroyed a Barcelona side that had just romped to the La Liga title. Without Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, The Reds still wouldn’t be denied.
Perhaps the trophies that followed would have done so anyway. But that game really announced Liverpool as a genuine force yet again.
Since then, Henderson has lifted six different trophies as Liverpool captain. Even if he goes on to lift six more, he surely won’t play in such a significant, astounding, emotional game ever again.
