Liverpool forward Luis Diaz has been ranked as the third highest valued player in England.
That’s according to the Liverpool Echo. Citing data from the CIES Football Observatory, the Echo report that Diaz is now worth in excess of £100m.
That valuation has reportedly seen him jump ahead of Liverpool teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.
However, it isn’t enough for him to claim top-spot in the Premier League. Instead, Manchester City hold both of the two highest valued players in the country. It isn’t a surprise to see Erling Haaland as one of the top two, but Phil Foden’s inclusion is a little more unexpected.
Diaz taking on a bigger role for Liverpool
Whatever way you look at it, Liverpool’s signing of Diaz for an initial £37.5m was great business.
The Colombian was arguably the difference between The Reds winning a domestic double last season, or ending it empty-handed.
Diaz’s arrival from Porto gave Liverpool the shot in the arm they desperately needed after flagging around New Year.
As a result, it’s difficult to put an exact valuation on him. Not that Liverpool need to of course, the 25-year-old isn’t going anywhere.
But would supporters say he’s more valuable to the team than Salah for example? Probably not. Mo has been a constant source of goals over his five years at the club and deserves his status as Liverpool’s best paid player.
Is Diaz more valuable than a player like Virgil Van Dijk or Alisson Becker? Again, probably not at this stage. But he could be, the potential is there.
Diaz showed again on Monday night that he’s ready to stand up and be counted for the team. It would have been easy to sulk having seen Darwin Nunez sent off with The Reds a goal down, but Diaz didn’t.
Instead, he tore around the pitch like a man possessed. His goal was a banger, too. Even more impressive though was his constant tracking back to help Kostas Tsimikas defend.
Following Sadio Mane’s departure, Diaz has taken on great importance to Liverpool. If he can keep his momentum going, then these kind of accolades will continue to follow.
