Virgil Van Dijk has claimed that Luis Diaz can get even better for Liverpool, after the winger scored a wonder-goal last night.
As quoted by the Independent, Van Dijk said that the ‘incredible’ Liverpool man can improve even further.
“[Diaz is] A fantastic player. It’s obviously something we need and he provided that bit of special action and he can be so much better,” said the Dutchman. “He’s an incredible player already so we’ll see what the future brings.”
The goal aside, Diaz had another relatively quiet evening for Liverpool. If he can continue contributing in ways like he did last night though, that won’t matter too much at all.
Diaz still to find his scoring boots for Liverpool
There has been reasonable furore over Diaz since he arrived at Liverpool, and with good reason. The Colombian instantly injected his new team with the extra bit of energy they needed to compete on four fronts.
This culminated in a Man of the Match performance in the Carabao Cup final and a decisive contribution in the Champions League semi-final.
Diaz also earned himself a Ballon d’Or nomination for his brilliance with Liverpool and with Porto earlier in the season.
But for all the accolades, the fact remains that he could be much more efficient in-front of goal. The Colombian has seven goals in 29 appearances for Liverpool. Not a bad record, but hardly prolific either.
That needs to change a little now that Sadio Mane is no longer at the club. We also need to see Diaz perform consistently for 90 minutes at a time, rather than drifting in and out of games.
That’s nit-picking really though. Diaz is a joy to watch when he’s on-form and his workrate off the ball also sets him apart.
Last night was the latest example of what an important part of the team the 25-year-old now is. Hopefully his goal at The Kop end was the first of many this season.
