‘If I was there’: Jamie Carragher picks ‘unique’ Liverpool star as the PL player he wishes he could play with

Jamie Carragher says Trent Alexander-Arnold is the Premier League player he wishes he could play with and that he could even help.

It’s the 30th anniversary of the Premier League this week and Sky Sports were sure to celebrate it. They had a series of questions for Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville on Monday Night Football to see how they’ve viewed the last three decades.

One such question was about the current-day players. Who do Carragher and Neville wish they could have played with? Funnily enough, their first choices were both Liverpool players.

Neville picked Virgil van Dijk as a centre-back partner, before also giving a mention to Manchester City’s Phil Foden. Carragher, though, went in-depth on his pick – Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“I’m thinking of myself playing at centre-back and who I could affect, really,” said Carragher. “I’m going to say Trent. Maybe I’ve got my Liverpool hat on but [I’d want] to play with somebody so unique, creatively for the team. But the type of player I was, I was very big on organising my team.

“And I think I could actually help Trent at times. There was a chance against Crystal Palace tonight where before it happens, I’m thinking ‘Trent, get back, get back’. And I just think if I was there, I’d help him switch on at times when he’s maybe not switched on defensively.”

It’s an interesting one. Liverpool don’t have the leader of their defence next to Alexander-Arnold as Van Dijk plays on the left. Neville actually mentioned after Carragher’s comments that he wonders if Liverpool should switch the Dutchman’s side.

But there’s little doubt that Carragher would have a positive effect on someone like Alexander-Arnold. That was his game, after all – the defensive leader who kept his teammates properly organised.

And for such an attacking full-back, Alexander-Arnold would benefit from having that right next to him. Instead, Liverpool are heading in a different direction as they seek to form a partnership with the Scouser and Ibrahima Konaté.

Maybe that ends up having a similar effect – two players who play alongside one another for years and develop an understanding.
