Liverpool are preparing to offer Harvey Elliott a new contract at the club, just a year after his last extension.
That’s according to The Daily Mail, who claim that Jurgen Klopp wants to offer a contract to the teenager.
Elliott signed a deal that runs until 2026 with Liverpool last summer. But The Reds are now reportedly hoping to tie him down to ‘a period of longevity’ at Anfield.
It’s claimed that the fresh terms will come with a pay-rise, and will reflect Elliott’s progress in Klopp’s first-team at Liverpool. An agreement between the 19-year-old and Liverpool is said to be ‘close.’
Elliott ready to kick-on once again
At a time when Liverpool’s immediate future in midfield is a little uncertain, this should be welcome news.
Although he still has around four years to run on his current contract, it can’t hurt to ensure Elliott’s longer-term future. As the report indicates, he has also made significant progress since signing his last extension.
When he put pen to paper on his current contract, he was yet to properly establish himself as a first-team player. He’d just come off the back of an excellent loan spell at Blackburn Rovers, and it was expected that he may head out again for 2021/22.
Instead, Elliott set about making his mark in Klopp’s first-team plans. Having impressed the manager in pre-season, the then 18-year-old started three of the first four Premier League games.
Operating on the right of midfield, Elliott impressed before a nasty ankle injury in September halted his progress.
He wasn’t quite the same player on his return around the turn of the year. But he impressed for England U21 in the summer, being called ‘unbelievable’ by now Brentford man Keane Lewis-Potter via Hull Daily Mail. Elliott once again looks ready to make a push for the starting eleven.
Liverpool’s number 19 was good from the bench on the opening day of the season on Saturday. With Thiago Alcantara now injured, a spot has opened up in Klopp’s midfield. As he did last campaign, Elliott looks primed to make that spot his own.
If he can impress once again, then we can expect the contract talks to move rapidly.
