Vincent Kompany discussed Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg this week after reports that Burnley want to sign the player.
The Athletic reported this week that Burnley want Sepp van den Berg on loan. They face competition from German sides, apparently, but manager Vincent Kompany is particularly keen to sign the player.
Kompany has now been asked about that interest and while he showed some hesitation, he did compliment the Liverpool man.
“We’re talking about another club’s player,” he said, per the Liverpool Echo. ‘All I can say is Sepp is a really good player but a key part of it is to find a balance between the players we’ve already got and the game time, making sure that we’re strong enough.
“And if I follow the progress of our team I think it’s fair to say we have been defending well in our own way.”

The fact that Kompany would say anything on Van den Berg right now suggests there is something to the interest. We covered our initial thoughts on it here – and it’s all positive.
Burnley just suffered the drop from the Premier League and hired Kompany to mount an instant challenge to return. That’s exactly what Van den Berg needs after a very successful 18 months on loan with Preston North End.
It would be a step up in intensity, pressure and quality – all the things Liverpool want to see from the Dutchman. But as we said earlier in the week, it’ll all depend on what German teams want Van den Berg.
If any will offer European football, we imagine Liverpool will push for them. But at the very least, Burnley are a magnificent fall-back option and one the Reds may well take.
Having Van den Berg work under Kompany, at the very least, could be an opportunity they don’t want to pass up.
