‘He will be’: Jose Enrique urges Liverpool to go and sign £63m star, says he’d be ‘top-class’ at Anfield

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has urged the club to attempt to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Enrique was responding to a suggestion from a fan on Twitter that The Reds should make a move for de Jong. Agreeing with the idea, Enrique claimed that the 25-year-old would be a ‘top class’ player for Liverpool.

“Too expensive for the way we sign players but he will be the top class one for us,” wrote the former full-back.

de Jong’s situation at Barca is a messy one. But he appears to be on the market this summer. With Liverpool in need of a central-midfielder, perhaps this isn’t the most outlandish proposal.

Liverpool looking to avoid messy de Jong situation

Although a move for de Jong may make footballing sense for Liverpool, there’s no chance of it happening.

The Reds are generally smooth operators in the transfer window. There’s no way they’d get involved with a circus like the one surrounding de Jong.

According to The Athletic, amongst others, Manchester United have long-since agreed a fee of £63m with Barcelona for the Dutchman. But owing to all sorts of contractual and personal issues, the move is yet to happen.

Liverpool like to get their business done early in the window. Although they may now have to move into the market for a midfielder, you’d think they’d also want that done as soon as possible.

The de Jong saga looks like one that could run until the final hours of the window and even far beyond. That isn’t Liverpool’s style.

No matter the quality of the player, it doesn’t seem like something that Liverpool would get themselves involved in, certainly not at this point.

So it’s irrelevant if de Jong would improve Liverpool or not. Chances are that he would, he’s an excellent ball carrier and keeps things whizzing along in the middle of the pitch. Despite Enrique’s suggestions, the price also isn’t beyond The Reds.

In spite of all that though, his situation means that Liverpool would surely have a number of names ahead of his on their shortlist.
