‘A new midfielder’: Fabrizio Romano shares Liverpool’s stance on a last-gasp transfer this month

Fabrizio Romano shared the stance at Liverpool on potentially signing a new midfielder this month. The Reds are looking a little short.

This comes from Fabrizio Romano writing for Caught Offside. The journalist believes that Liverpool will have their eyes on a signing this month.

“Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool will consider a new midfielder if there is an opportunity on the market,” he wrote. Romano then gives his opinion that Matheus Nunes could be the right kind of fit.

“I believe that Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes is a very interesting player who could be a good fit for this team, but we need to see the amount that the club will be prepared to invest.”

Liverpool could be signing a new midfielder

Thiago’s injury on Saturday put Liverpool’s midfield into a new light. Suddenly they looked very short, with Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also missing the match.

But really, it’s put things into focus. Liverpool have three options over 30 in Thiago, Jordan Henderson and James Milner. They then have three under 21 in Jones, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho.

The ‘prime’ players, Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain, each have major doubts over their fitness. Not to mention that their contracts both expire in 2023.

Liverpool, then, will have midfielders on the mind anyway and it appears they did this summer. The Reds were heavily linked with Aurélién Tchouaméni, for instance. Romano himself claims they made calls about Jude Bellingham, too.

And so quite clearly, Liverpool would sign an elite midfielder right now. The question is whether they want to wait for one if none are available.

We’ve suggested three potential signings, including Nunes and Bellingham. Frenkie de Jong is another name worth considering, too. But it might come down to Liverpool waiting it out until 2023 to try and get Bellingham.

The question is whether they’re seriously hurting themselves this season in doing so. Bellingham isn’t worth passing up trophies for and someone like Nunes could well be the difference this season.

Liverpool have a big month ahead, then. At the very least, it sounds as though they’re looking for potential signings – let’s see if they find one.
