'Done really well': Jordan Henderson says Liverpool have a 19-year-old who's really impressed him in pre-season

Jordan Henderson has been impressed by Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho during pre-season.

Speaking to TalkSPORT, Henderson assessed Liverpool’s attacking options for the new season. As well as heralding Carvalho, The Reds captain paid tribute to fellow new-boy Darwin Nunez.

“I’ve been really impressed with him (Darwin). He’s still a very young boy, but I’m seeing a lot of positive things, a lot of good things. I think he will give us something different as well up front. Jota as well, who is injured at the minute, we’ve got him to come into the frame as well. Darwin and also Harvey Elliott, [Fabio] Carvalho has also come in and done really well on the wing,” said Henderson.

Liverpool may have lost Sadio Mane, but the captain sounds confident that the squad is potentially even stronger regardless.

Carvalho showing what he can do in pre-season

It was difficult to know what to expect of Fabio Carvalho at Liverpool. Prior to the turn of the year, not a lot of Liverpool fans would have even heard of the 19-year-old, much less seen him in action.

As a very young player, the temptation was to expect him to play nothing more than a supporting role for Jurgen Klopp.

That may still prove to be the case as the season goes on. But from what we’ve seen of him so far, Carvalho could comfortably be a proper first-team option for Klopp.

A lot of his time has been spent out on the left-wing. Although it’s apparent that this isn’t his best position moving forward, being close to the opposition goal has allowed an insight into his qualities.

The young Portuguese loves to drift into dangerous areas between the lines. He has excellent close control and is adept at picking the lock of teams sitting deep against Liverpool.

Carvalho may need to work on building his upper-body strength as he prepares to face top-level defenders. But that should come with time and work in the gym.

All the signs so far have been incredibly positive. As he continues to develop, he may have to get used to praise like the one from his new captain.
