Chelsea are looking to sign Nico Barella, according to reports in Italy. Liverpool have long been linked with an interest.
This comes from Italian outlet CalcioMercatoWeb. They claim that Chelsea are looking to sign Inter’s Nico Barella and have the player on their shortlist.
Barella isn’t even the only Inter star that the Blues want, in fact. They’ve also got eyes on Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries.
However, both players have the same thing in common – Inter don’t want to sell them. With under a month left in the transfer window, Chelsea will have to apply a lot of pressure.
Chelsea looking to sign Nico Barella
This isn’t the strongest source, admittedly, but it is a believable report. Barella is an outstanding midfielder and one that Fabio Capello once labelled as one of Europe’s best.
And so it wasn’t a surprise when Liverpool were heavily linked with interest back in 2021. Gazzetta Dello Sport were one of those claiming that the Reds would bid.
It’s one that we still believe suits Liverpool. Barella is an extraordinary midfielder at his best and there are few better options for the long-term future there. If the Reds want successors to Jordan Henderson and Thiago, the Italian should absolutely be near the top of their list.
But only if he’s still available, of course. Chelsea may well try to pressure Inter into a sale this summer, especially as they’re currently struggling to make a statement signing. Barella would certainly be that, if they can get the funds together.
We’ll cross our fingers that they can’t as Liverpool would be in a very strong position next summer if Barella remains available. The Reds are widely expected to make a move in 2023 for a midfielder, with Jude Bellingham their preference.
Having Barella there as an alternative – let alone a potential teammate – would make negotiations easier. Or maybe just provide a world-class addition in his own right.
