Reports from Italy show just how easily 'quality' Liverpool player could lose his Anfield career

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has his career at Anfield hanging in the balance. Reports out of Italy concerning Liverpool show that.

CalcioMercatoWeb reported this week that Liverpool are currently looking at Hakan Calhanoglu. Now, in all honesty, we don’t believe that – the source isn’t great and Calhanoglu just isn’t the type of player the Reds want.

We could be wrong, of course, but it’s worth taking that one with an ocean of salt.

What is interesting here, though, is the supposed reason for Liverpool looking at the Turkish playmaker. The report claims it’s because the Reds are worried about Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

That we do believe. The Englishman has been missing in pre-season and Jurgen Klopp talked just this week about a ‘serious’ injury. We might not see Oxlade-Chamberlain for some time. Liverpool, then, may very well be looking at potential replacements to cover midfield as a senior player. Again, we don’t think they’d look at Calhanoglu but that isn’t to say they’re not scouting.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and his Anfield career

Such a scenario would be a disaster for Oxlade-Chamberlain. Not only is he at risk of losing his place but his contract expires in 2023, Any senior player stepping in front of him right now would eliminate any chance of a new deal. It could just rule out any real appearances for the season.

Because right now, Oxlade-Chamberlain does have a role. It appears that Liverpool want to use attacking midfielders more often this season and he remains their senior option. Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho all lack experience – Oxlade-Chamberlain can be the ‘safe’ option.

Only, not if he’s injured and not if Liverpool decide they can’t rely on him. Both remain very really scenarios and the element of truth in this report shows that.

If the Reds decide this month to bring in someone – even short-term – to fill that role, Oxlade-Chamberlain will be done with Liverpool. There was a time last season where his performances suggested a new contract could be on the way as Klopp labelled him ‘quality’.

Oxlade-Chamberlain might not get the opportunities to get back on that track if Liverpool sign someone, though. And few would bat an eyelid if they did.
