Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on the path to a new Liverpool contract. It’s one we didn’t think would happen a few short months ago.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain entered this season in trouble. His contract expires in 2023, per the Liverpool Echo, meaning he had one campaign to justify a new one.
Otherwise, Liverpool would almost certainly sell the Englishman. He’s 28 now and still capable of demanding a decent asking price – the Reds would sell for something, rather than lose him for nothing next year.
Earning a new deal would be tough, too. Thiago and Jordan Henderson are both ahead of him in the midfield pecking order and are world-class players. Naby Keita, while also not quite established, is younger than Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Then there’s Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones. Both are significantly younger than the former Arsenal man and only getting better. That’s a near-impossible position to be in for someone supposedly in their prime.
And yet, we think he’s on the way to earning a new contract.
Can Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain earn a new Liverpool contract?
Jurgen Klopp said last month that Oxlade-Chamberlain was playing the best football since his £35m arrival.
“It’s pretty much the best Oxlade since I am here,” he said, per the Guardian. “I know he was more spectacular in moments, scored wonderful goals against [Manchester] City and really good goals for us, but it is a completely new quality now – calming the game down, being not only the sprinter with the ball or the shooter but being involved in all the things on the pitch.
“It is a massive step. I am really happy with Ox in the moment and hopefully, it stays like this.”
That came after a period of wonderful midfield performances where Oxlade-Chamberlain offered a fantastic all-around game. Like Klopp, we were very impressed.

It’s what we’ve seen since, however, that really further Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract hopes. He’s currently covering the right flank with Mohamed Salah off at the Africa Cup of Nations. Oxlade-Chamberlain is doing so brilliantly, too, scoring in each of his last two games.
And that’s worth a lot to Liverpool. Oxlade-Chamberlain isn’t just shining in midfield but he’s a great option to cover the wing, too. Throw in his home-grown status and we’re not sure Liverpool will find a replacement if they were to sell him.
If Oxlade-Chamberlain continues to play like this – and can finally have some luck with injuries – we think that new contract looks pretty likely and fully deserved.
