Jurgen Klopp appears to have made his mind up about who’s going to start upfront vs Man City. Liverpool face them in the Community Shield.
The Community Shield is tomorrow and with it, the start of Liverpool’s season. The Reds will take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in a battle for the first silverware of the campaign.
Now, the actually value of that silverware actually is up for debate and Jurgen Klopp doesn’t sound 100% convinced of its importance. Still, here’s a chance to score a psychological blow against City at the very least.
For that, Klopp will want his best possibly Liverpool side and we expect a strong one. In fact, we believe the boss hinted at his selection against RB Salzburg this week.
There remain some big decisions, though – the biggest arguably being who starts up top. Klopp could go with Darwin Nunez against City, throwing in a very unpredictably element. Alternatively, Roberto Firmino is there to offer Liverpool’s natural game and consistency that the team might need.
If we’re right about the Salzburg game, it appears that Firmino will be the selection. The Liverpool Echo now claim that the Brazilian is ‘increasingly likely’ to get the nod of Nunez, too.
Roberto Firmino to start vs Man City
This one shouldn’t really be a shock. Nunez has had some fantastic moments in pre-season but he can’t possibly be fully up to speed with the rest of the team yet. That could prove to be a problem against a team as good as City.
And anyone who listened to Klopp talk about Firmino this week can see why he’ll place his faith in the no.9. The German labelled him the ‘heart and soul’ of this Liverpool side, saying he’s ‘essential’ to what they do.
It seems that trumps the unpredictable element that Nunez could bring and everyone may need to wait in order to see the new signing on Saturday. Not exactly a bad bench option, mind.
