Klopp gave away Liverpool's Community Shield lineup with his half-time decision vs Salzburg - RTK View

Liverpool appeared to give away their lineup for the Community Shield with a decision against RB Salzburg tonight. The Reds face Manchester City on Saturday.

Liverpool have now played their final pre-season friendly before the Community Shield on Saturday. The Reds will take on Manchester City at the King Power stadium and Jurgen Klopp must now know his team.

It certainly appears that he does. One decision from the boss against RB Salzburg tonight seemed to show off the lineup for the game – mostly through who Klopp didn’t bring on.

Essentially, we think the outfield 10 that played the last half hour or so will take on City this weekend:

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Andy Robertson, Fabinho, Thiago, Jordan Henderson, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz.

None of those players started the game and only Robertson and Firmino came on at half-time. Klopp’s decision to stick with a much younger team for 60-odd minutes certainly suggests that he didn’t want to give too much game-time to the starters just three days before the City match.

So that’s what we think is going on here. Though, the fact that both Firmino and Darwin Nunez got 45 minutes suggests that one might still be up in the air. At the very least, we think that switching one for the other will be Klopp’s major substitute in the second half on Saturday.

But the fact that Nunez has now played the bulk of his minutes with Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho – two players who won’t start in Leicester – suggests he’s not quite first-choice yet. Firmino still appears to hold that berth.

Alisson will also reportedly be back for the weekend, though he wasn’t quite fit enough to play Salzburg. He should be in goal for the City game.

We think we might have been slightly off with our early prediction, then. We had Nunez in up top but it looks like Firmino will start, while Ibrahima Konaté was our pick over Matip. It seems Klopp has slightly different ideas in mind.
