Glen Johnson is convinced that Bukayo Saka would suit Liverpool ‘perfectly’. There are reports that the Reds want Arsenal’s star.
The Daily Mail wrote in early June that Liverpool were one of the major clubs that have eyes on Bukayo Saka. The Arsenal star is in a complicated contract situation where his deal technically expires in a year.
However, the Gunners can trigger a clause to extend that deal until 2024. Doing so is a last resort, meaning Saka hasn’t agreed on a new long-term contract – they’d essentially trigger the extension against his will. You’d imagine a sale would quickly follow.
Thus Liverpool and Manchester City are watching in case they can take advantage. The Mail recently reported that Arsenal have put a new contract in front of Saka but it’s unclear whether he’ll sign it. We imagine he’ll wait to see how the Gunners start the season – but that’s pure speculation on our part.
Bukayo Saka would suit Liverpool ‘perfectly’
Former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson recently talked about the potential for Saka to move on. He’d love to see the player at Anfield – if he truly wants to leave.
“I’d like to see Bukayo Saka go to Liverpool,” he told The Games Cabin. “He’d suit Liverpool perfectly.
“But he’s playing well for Arsenal, and he clearly enjoys being there. He’s obviously a good lad, and you can see that from the way he interacts with other players.
“He’s still super young so maybe a few more years at Arsenal would work too. As long as he continues to stamp his authority there, then the big teams are still going to want to sign him.”
As Johnson says, Saka is still young. There’s no real rush to get him right now as he’d still be at the start of his prime years at the end of any new contract. Liverpool and City could wait it out.
But getting him now would be a dream as Saka has extraordinary talent. We think he’d be a sensational signing if Liverpool can get it done – but they’d have to seriously sway his gaze from the Gunners.
Still, we’ll cross our fingers as opportunities like this don’t come along often. Saka could well be on the move in 2023 and if he is, Liverpool should ready one hell of an offer.
