Liverpool wonderkid steps up to U21s after 28 goals last season, already has two goals in last two friendlies

Liverpool youngster Oakley Cannonier has made a great start to life with the Reds’ U21s. The 18-year-old scored 28 for the U18s last season.

Oakley Cannonier is making the step up to Liverpool’s Under 21s team this season and things are looking good. The 18-year-old scored as the Reds beat Fleetwood Town 4-1 on Wednesday as they prepare for the new season.

And Cannonier appears to be ready for it. This is his second goal in his last two friendlies with the U21s, having also scored against Kidderminster on Friday.

It’s certainly a good sign that Cannonier will hit this new level with some comfort as Liverpool look to see if he can repeat the magic of last season.

Oakley Cannonier for the U21s

Cannonier was a revelation for Liverpool’s U18s last time out. He started the season in magnificent form, scoring in each of his first eight games. He didn’t quite keep that form going for the entire campaign but finished with a remarkable record of 28 goals in 25 games.

Throw in his four assists and Cannonier’s season looks pretty ridiculous. It was inevitable, then, that Liverpool would want to see how he handles U21 level this season.

As we say, the early signs are good. Cannonier has been very involved in the friendlies and is starting to gather some momentum heading into the season with goals in his last two. You can’t ask for much more than that while he’s still learning the level.

But no one should get too carried away here. U18 to U21 is a massive jump – you’re going from playing with kids to playing with those who can handle life at senior level. There really is no telling how comfortable Cannonier will be, even with his incredible goal record last season.

The early signs are good, though, and the youngster is unquestionably one to watch this season.
