Oakley Cannonier extended his remarkable goal record for Liverpool Under 18s this weekend. The teenager just keeps scoring goals.
Liverpool Under 18s drew 1-1 with Derby County on Saturday and there are no prizes for guessing the goalscorer. Oakley Cannonier, yet again, found the net for the Reds’ youth team.
That’s now 21 league goals for the striker and he’s done it in 21 games. The truly incredible thing here, though, is that Cannonier only has one hattrick. This isn’t a case of a few fantastic performances boosting his numbers.
Instead, the 17-year-old has just been remarkably consistent. He’s only failed to score on four occasions for the U18s this season and only once went back-to-back games without a goal.
Cannonier has threatened nearly every team in his division, then – the teenager looks unstoppable. Quite clearly, Liverpool must think about his next step soon.
Oakley Cannonier at Liverpool
It’s been an incredible season for Cannonier and his numbers are just fantastic. It’s the consistency, though, that’s really catching the eye. He’s essentially guaranteeing the U18s a goal every game – very few players can offer that, even at youth level.
And so the Under 23s beckon. We imagine the 17-year-old will see his opportunities grow in the higher age group and, hopefully, he’s a regular there by this time in 2023. Unquestionably, Cannonier is one to watch over the next little while as we see if his goals translate to a higher level.
He is, of course, just one of several incredibly exciting young players at Liverpool right now. The likes of Kaide Gordon and Mateusz Musialowski made the jump up this season after impressing last year at U18 level. Cannonier will inevitably follow in their footsteps.
