Liverpool’s latest training video shows Joe Gomez in the kind of ‘phenomenal’ shape that Jurgen Klopp has talked about. The centre-back looks ready to take the new season by storm.

Liverpool put out their Inside Training video yesterday and there was a lot to like about it. We picked out Mohamed Salah as one player who looks fantastically sharp – he dominated a shooting exercise.

But he certainly wasn’t the only one. Joe Gomez also caught the eye in the same exercise, handling the likes of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez wonderfully well.

The exercise saw a goal at either end of a small pitch, with an attacking player receiving passes from all angles. After a couple of efforts, a defender comes alive to pressure the player taking the shots.

Gomez produced some fantastic tackles and pressures that show him in brilliant shape. It’s the kind of shape Jurgen Klopp recently talked about, in fact.

Joe Gomez shines in training video

“In terms of right now, Joe is in phenomenal shape,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com as the defender returned to training earlier this month. “We had a few weeks off and when I returned to AXA I saw him and my first thought was ‘Wow!’”.

It’s what you want to hear and Gomez certainly seems to be in that kind of shape. He looks strong, sharp and quick – everything he was back in 2020, really.

Because it wasn’t that long ago that Gomez started every week for a side that dominated the Premier League. He was outstanding across the 2019/20 campaign and started the 2020/21 season well, too.

Then that injury struck and Gomez hasn’t had a great run in the side since. We barely saw the defender last season, in fact.

Hopefully, then, Klopp’s words and his efforts in training are positive signs. Gomez being back at his best would be a massive boost for Liverpool as he remains an incredibly bright part of he future at Anfield.
