Liverpool can fit Matheus Nunes into their squad without killing any deal for Jude Bellingham. The Reds reportedly want both.

Portuguese outlet Correio de Manha claims that Liverpool want Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes. Now, they’re not the first to say that and we know full well that the Reds have eyes on Portuguese football.

There may just be something in this, then.

Nunes is a fantastic midfielder and one that we think fits in well at Liverpool. In fact, he might just fit in perfectly for what Jurgen Klopp wants from his central players.

Nunes would cost around £38m upfront, however, with another £4m in add-ons. It’s a relatively steep price, though not far off what Liverpool paid for Luis Diaz. It’s a fair rate to sign a talented midfielder who can immediately play a first-team role.

But would this interrupt other plans? Liverpool, after all, may not have Nunes at the top of their shortlist when it comes to boosting their midfield. We think they can sign the Sporting star and go all-out for their no.1, though.

Liverpool can fit Matheus Nunes

All signs point to Liverpool wanting Jude Bellingham to be the future of their midfield. The Liverpool Echo claims they’d pay a ‘significant fee’ to land him, while Fabrizio Romano believes calls have taken place.

We’ve written before that Bellingham should be the ultimate focus for the next few transfer windows. That means not doing anything that jeopardises that move – but we’re not sure signing Nunes would do that.

After all, Liverpool arguably have room for a midfielder right now and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract expires in 2023. James Milner is only on a one-year deal, as well, and may move on next year. In fact, Naby Keita’s expires, too, should the club really want to free-up space.

But on top of that, both Jordan Henderson and Thiago are into their 30s and with questionable fitness records. Liverpool can absolutely justify a move for Nunes and still comfortably make space to add Bellingham next year. We’re not sure they’d struggle at all, actually.

Now, money might be a different issue – can Liverpool actually afford both? It’s very hard to say as Bellingham would be a signing outside of anything the club has ever done before. If the money is there, though, we think the Reds can justify a double signing here to secure the future of their midfield.
