Jurgen Klopp gave his take on Jordan Henderson after Liverpool’s 5-0 win over RB Leipzig. It doesn’t sound great for Naby Keita.
Liverpool trashed RB Leipzig on Thursday after a dominant second-half performance. It was 1-0 at the break but the Reds ran riot with four goals from Darwin Nunez once things got going again.
The Uruguayan gets the headlines, then, and rightfully so. He looked like exactly the kind of striker Liverpool wanted, capable of pushing defences back and finishing his chances. It was brilliant.
And those chances just kept coming in the second half, even though Liverpool struggled to consistently create int eh first. Jurgen Klopp points the finger at one player for the reason why – Jordan Henderson.
“Hendo came on, Millie – they both were lively,” he said after the game, per Liverpoolfc.com. “Hendo all of a sudden as an eight, went in behind and we created chances.”
Jurgen Klopp gives notable Jordan Henderson take
One player who might not like the sound of this is Naby Keita, who played that ‘eight’ role in the first half. The Guinean didn’t have a great game, it should be said, and struggled to get going.
Klopp then saw a clear difference when his captain entered the fray. That’s quite telling – especially as he looks to pick his team to face Manchester City in the Community Shield.
Advantage Henderson, then, for the right-sided midfield spot. The results speak for themselves but Klopp outright saying it suggests he liked what he saw.
Keita will hope to get back on track quickly, though. He’s out of contract in 2023 and is yet to get a new one – Liverpool won’t want the transfer window to close without renewing that deal or moving the player on.
Keita, then, must show the club that he’s worth every penny he wants. He didn’t quite manage that on Thursday, unfortunately.
