Jurgen Klopp has brought back a tactic we haven’t seen at Liverpool in quite some time. The Reds are trying new things this season.

It seems we’re going to see a far more versatile Liverpool this season – and that’s something Jurgen Klopp clearly wants.

“It will be really interesting,” Klopp recently said, per the Independent. “We had two or three or four years where it was always clear before the pre-season we start up front with Sadio [Mané], Bobby and Mo.

“Now the door is open for pretty much everybody. That will make us completely difficult to analyse. That is what we have to use.”

And we saw Klopp really show that off against RB Leipzig on Thursday. The boss started with Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah for the first-half and things looked good.

Then there was a lot of change after half-time. Darwin Nunez came on and Klopp eventually swapped up his entire attack – reverting to something we haven’t seen in six years.

Nunez led the line for the last half-four, with Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho either side of him. Curtis Jones then played an attacking-midfielder role – meaning the Reds had three no.10s hovering around Nunez.

That’s a tactic Klopp first used in his debut season, 2015/16. Daniel Sturridge was the primary striker, with Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana operating around him. The side lacked pace but boasted fantastic creativity and trickery.

And it seems we could see a return of that. The three young playmakers created chaos for Leipzig, always looking to carry the ball into spaces as Nunez pushed defenders back off the ball.

It worked, of course, as the Uruguayan scored four goals in the second 45. This is something we thought Klopp might turn to this season, with a bigger place for attacking midfielders – though, we didn’t think he’d use them all at once.

Liverpool want to be versatile and unpredictable this season. Going back through Klopp’s time at the club for ‘new’ ideas certainly makes them that.
