England cricketer Moeen Ali has claimed that Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is an ‘impressive’ cricketer.
Speaking to The Athletic, Ali, who is a Reds fan, insisted that the Liverpool star could play cricket if he wanted to.
“He’s a very good cricketer — surprisingly good,” the bowler said of Oxlade-Chamberlain. “He can bowl pretty fast and he genuinely bats really well. Him and James Milner are really quite impressive.”
Ox reportedly was offered a trial to play for Hampshire, but chose to pursue football instead. It’s no surprise to hear that jack-of-all-trades Milner could also try his hand at another sport, too. Is there anything the 36-year-old can’t do?!
Ox following in the footsteps
Oxlade-Chamberlain may occasionally have his critics, but he certainly comes from impressive sporting stock.
His dad, Mark Chamberlain was famously a footballer, too. Chamberlain earned eight caps for England and played over 200 times in the old first division.
His uncle, Neville Chamberlain also played professionally, although not to quite the same level.
Alex has surpassed them both, though. Whilst he only has one England cap in the last four years, he has still managed to rack up 35 appearances for his country.
Having seemingly been given another chance at Liverpool, he could still add to that if he can fight his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans.
Despite his achievements though, it has always felt as though Oxlade-Chamberlain has fallen a little short. A brilliant start at Liverpool was interrupted by injury, and he hasn’t quite hit the same heights since.
With a year left on his deal, his time to turn that around at Liverpool is running out. There’s no question that he has contributed to a successful period for the club, but if he wants to be truly remembered, he needs to pull something special out of the bag this season.
Ox does have a propensity for the spectacular, so don’t write him off just yet.
