Report: PL club decide to try and sign 'fantastic' Liverpool player instead of Man City defender

Nottingham Forest are confident of winning the race to sign Liverpool defender Neco Williams.

That’s according to 90min, who claim that the newly-promoted side have now decided to prioritise the Liverpool player over other targets.

Forest were reportedly weighing up a move for Manchester City full-back Issa Kabore. Now though, they’re reportedly hopeful of seeing off competition from Crystal Palace, Brentford and Fulham for Williams, who’s their number one choice.

It’s claimed that Fulham have accepted defeat in their pursuit of the Liverpool star. Instead, they’ll attempt to sign Wolfsburg right-back Kevin Mbabu.

Forest still pushing for Williams

Forest have just signed Troyes right-back Giulian Biancone. As a result, it looked like their pursuit of Williams may have ended.

However, that would now appear not to be the case.

Interestingly, Kabore, the other named target, was also at Troyes last season, on-loan from City. Like Williams, he’s also 21-years-old and is already a full international. The youngster has twenty-seven caps for Burkina Faso.

He is yet to play first-team football for City, but has plenty of experience otherwise.

For Forest to choose Williams over such an accomplished alternative goes to show the regard in which the Welshman is held. He obviously caught the eye in the Championship last year. Fulham boss Marco Silva called him ‘fantastic’ via The Athletic.

Steve Cooper’s side have already reportedly seen a bid of an initial £11m rejected by Liverpool. If they’re willing to come back with a bid just a touch higher, it’s surely likely that they’ll get their man.

It’ll be a shame to lose a clearly talented player from the academy. It’s not all that often that The Reds have a genuine option break through into the first-team.

But if Liverpool can secure £15m or so for Williams, it surely has to go down as a success story for the club nevertheless.
