Darwin Nunez is one of eleven players who will miss the first day of Liverpool training ahead of the 2022/23 season.
The Reds kick-off their preparations for the new season today, 4th July. But according to the Liverpool Echo, they’ll be without a whole host of senior players, including their new £64m signing.
Players such as Nunez, Virgil Van Dijk, Fabinho and Mohamed Salah will instead join up with the squad on Saturday 9th July. Liverpool will then fly out to Singapore to take on Manchester United the following Tuesday.
The other seven players to be absent from the AXA Training Centre today are: Alisson Becker, Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kostas Tsimikas, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota.
Fringe players get the chance to impress
Taking a look through that list and it looks like Jurgen Klopp will have to wait for most of his starting eleven to arrive. The eleven in question would make up a pretty decent line-up themselves!
As a result, players who were on the fringes of the squad last season should be desperate to prove their worth over the coming days.
Players like Roberto Firmino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain need to hit the ground running from Monday morning. Both have contracts set to expire next year, and a good pre-season could set the tone for the campaign ahead.
Fail to catch the manager’s eye, and they’ll likely drift into the background once the more established stars arrive.
There’ll also be an opportunity for new signings Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay to stand out. Liverpool’s new teenager’s are both set to arrive at Kirkby on Monday and will hope to impress Klopp whilst working in a smaller group.
It’s always an exciting day for fans seeing the player’s come back after the summer break. Five weeks on from the heartbreak of Paris, they’ll have to wait a little longer for many of the star names to return, though.
