Report: Club happy to drop out of race to sign 'fantastic' Liverpool player, there's only one bidder left now

Fulham are ready to withdraw their interest in signing Liverpool right-back Neco Williams this summer.

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that the race for the Liverpool player’s signature is now a one-horse affair.

It’s claimed that Fulham boss Marco Silva is now ‘happy to keep out of it’ as Nottingham Forest test Liverpool’s resolve.

Forest reportedly had a bid of £11m plus £4m in add-ons rejected by The Reds yesterday. However, Steve Cooper’s side are said to be the only ‘serious bidders’ as Fulham have ‘other targets in mind.’

Forest see off competition for Williams

The battle for Williams’ services had looked set to be a crowded one this summer. That seems unlikely now, as the saga looks ready to reach an inevitable conclusion.

That conclusion will surely now be that the 21-year-old full-back begins the new season in Nottingham.

Although Liverpool have rejected Forest’s first bid, it seems that they’re not too far away from The Reds’ asking price.

It was claimed at the beginning of the week that Liverpool would actually look for a package of around £20m for Williams. But with only one bidder remaining, it’s perhaps now unrealistic that they’ll be able to recoup quite as much as that.

Instead, should Forest come back with a slightly improved offer, Liverpool will have no choice but to accept.

It looks like a good move for Williams, and decent money for Liverpool for an academy product. Although a fine player, the Wales international was never going to get past Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield.

Liverpool would be wise to insert a sell-on, or potentially a buy-back clause though, should the 21-year-old continue to kick on in the Premier League.

There is surprise that Fulham have pulled out. Silva was a big fan of his on-loan star last season. He was gushing in his praise of Williams throughout his six-month stay at Craven Cottage, even calling him ‘fantastic’ via The Athletic.

Your move, Forest.
